The Bayat Foundation works to renovate and construct educational and medical facilities for all of Afghanistan’s people, as well as to provide opportunities for learning and safe havens for the country’s refugees and orphaned children. The foundation and its donors have responded in particular to families’ needs for food, clean water, medicine, and social support amidst the devastation of war. Recent reports describe living conditions for most Afghans as extremely poor, with many experiencing food insecurity on a regular basis.
Among other activities, the foundation has offered winter aid packages, delivering warm blankets, clothing, foodstuffs, and oil to those in need. During the holy season of Ramadan, the foundation has distributed packages containing rice, flour, tea, and other necessities to families in need in the capital of Kabul and in other provinces.
During Ramadan, the Muslim principle of zakat, the giving of charity to those in need, becomes a special focus. Traditionally, more fortunate Muslim households extend extra assistance to their less fortunate neighbors during this time, a practice mirrored by nongovernmental organizations’ increased aid to war-ravaged regions such as Syria. In Islam, the distribution of charity is considered a duty, with everyone expected to contribute a portion of his or her yearly income to help others.
The Bayat Foundation’s efforts during Ramadan continue this tradition of zakat. The foundation also strives to assist women, children, elderly individuals, and vulnerable populations throughout the rest of the year.
