In 2010, the Bayat Foundation awarded a $10,000 Empowering Women Grant to the Justice for All Organization, a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting legal awareness among Afghan women. The organization pursues this goal via a number of community centers and programs throughout Afghanistan, where it provides legal education, advice, and representation to further the empowerment of women.
The Justice for All Organization (JFAO) launched its pilot Legal Aid and Advice Bureau in Kabul in 2009. Partnering with the international nongovernmental organization Global Rights, the center provided professional legal counsel to more than 1,300 women within a year, assisting with both criminal and civil cases. It aided women in family court cases involving forced marriage, divorce, and child custody, in addition to 497 cases involving domestic violence.
After introducing a second successful Legal Aid and Advice Bureau in Kundoz province, JFAO began developing a third in Badakhshan province in 2012. The center launched with the capacity to provide legal advice to 200 individuals each year, serving both men and women. Its mission also includes providing legal representation to 92 women and children in family, criminal, and civil courts. Moreover, the Badakhshan bureau caters to women and children who have been accused of a crime or detained, who do not have access to legal counsel, and who currently lack representation in the family and criminal courts.
